Also known as a "CAT scan," CT (Computed Tomography) combines multiple X-ray images to produce a two-dimensional cross-section view of anatomy with as much as 100 times more clarity than conventional X-ray. CT imaging is used to clearly show soft tissue, like the brain, as well as dense tissue, like bone. The information gathered during a CT scan is processed by a computer and interpreted by a radiologist to diagnose, or rule out, disease. Some CT scans require the use of a contrast medium. Given intravenously, the contrast agent highlights certain body parts to enable the radiologist to better see any abnormalities. MRI. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a test that uses a computer, magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of the inside of the body. It can be used for virtually all parts of the body, including the specific area troubling you. MRI does not use any form of ionizing radiation, so no special preparation is needed.

What is breast MRI?
Breast MRI is a highly sensitive test for detecting cancers not found in traditional mammography, including small breast lesions. It is also useful for determining the extent of cancer if there is more than one lesion. The three-dimensional image reconstruction allows radiologists to look at suspicious areas from multiple angles. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a computer, magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of the inside of the body. A special coil is worn around the chest to ensure the most accurate and detailed images are obtained. Unlike mammography, breast MRI is exclusively physician-referred, which means that your doctor must determine the appropriateness of this test for you. New guidelines suggest that breast MRI be used for certain women with an especially high risk of developing breast cancer.
What is digital mammography?
Digital mammography uses low-dose X-rays to generate images of the compressed breast. It is the most widely used and most trusted tool in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Radiology Associates performs 3D digital mammograms at each of our centers and utilizes computer-aided detection (CAD) for all screening mammograms.
How does a 3D mammogram work?
During the 3D mammogram, the x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images. A computer then produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one-millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast detail.
